Moist Turbulent Convection

High-resolution simulations of conditionally unstable atmospheric convection.

During my FARE fellowship at IIT Kanpur, I worked on high-resolution simulations of dry and moist turbulent convection in Earth’s troposphere.

Cloud-bearing atmospheric convection viewed over a wide landscape

Atmospheric convection couples buoyant turbulence, moisture, and large-scale circulation.

The project studies how moisture, conditional instability, and intermittency alter turbulent transport. It connects fundamental convection physics with processes relevant to atmospheric flows and monsoon dynamics.

Research questions

  • How does latent heating reorganize turbulent transport?
  • What controls intermittency in conditionally unstable convection?
  • How do dry and moist systems differ across spatial scales?
